When they say Las Vegas is an adult Disneyland, it’s true. There is no better way to describe it. I flew to Vegas for the weekend for a bachelorette party and I had some pretty crazy expectations for what it was going to be like (too many Vegas themed movies I think). I had been to two similar places in the past, Atlantic City and Macau but let me tell you, while Las Vegas shares slight similarities it is nothing like either of them, it’s much better! These were my first impressions of Las Vegas.

The sign was so small!

We took a limo to the famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign for photos and the biggest shock was that it was so small, not the towering billboard size like I had imagined.

It was clean

For some reason I imagined Vegas as a little grungy but it was actually really well kept and everything was really clean.

It was smaller than I had imagined

Although it was a few miles, we were actually able to walk the entire strip while wandering in and out of the different hotels. There are some trams going between the hotels at the end of the strip but it’s a very walkable city.

The hotels weren’t just hotels

Every hotel had some sort of spectacle to go with their theme. Visiting each hotel was an event in itself. The replicas of Venice in the Venetian hotel complete with canals and gondolas were pretty amazing.

It wasn’t crowded like Times Square

It might have been the time of year (I hear on New Year’s it can get crazy) but it never seemed overwhelmingly crowded anywhere which was nice.

The gambling was more low key than the movies

When I imagined Vegas casinos, I had envisioned constant screaming and cheering and while there was the occasional cheer it wasn’t nonstop as I had thought.

It was for a range of ages

Some of my friends had mentioned that they had gone to Vegas for family vacations as kids and I was really confused by that. But after visiting I see why, several of the hotels were very kid friendly, Excalibur was Medieval themed and New York, New York had a roller coaster! Mandalay Bay even had an aquarium.

It was a great place for a weekend getaway.

Between the food, shopping, pool parties, nightclubs, gambling and exploring it was a great place for a weekend escape, you don’t have to feel guilty for indulging, staying out too late or just relaxing all day.

And one note! If the cab driver at the airport asks if you want to take the highway or the street, say the street! They’re trying to trick you into a $40 cab ride instead of a $20 one.
