If I needed to design and build my own mansion, the American Trade Hotel would be it. From the decor, food and location, it is styled with a perfect mix of modern and old accents that make it a must-stay boutique hotel in the charming Casco Viejo neighborhood of Panama City.

Staying at the American Trade Hotel was a bit of a treat to myself after spending the previous two weeks traveling through the rest of Panama. The hotel is part of the same group that owns the popular ACE hotel here in NYC and sits on Plaza Herrera in Casco Viejo. An area that has recently seen a revival with many of the beautiful and historical buildings being renovated and turned into hotels, restaurants and shops.

With live music in the lobby, a restaurant, bar, rooftop pool, courtyard and library, every detail has been carefully curated, down to the Turkish robes you can take home with you (for $95). Welcome at check in with a hot towel and Aesop soaps in the room put the finishing touches on my stay.

While it’s a little pricier than some of the even more luxury brand name hotels in downtown Panama City, experiencing Panama City at the American Trade Hotel is definitely worth the splurge.
